Mayonnaise:

This is a tricky one because mayonnaise should always be made with whole eggs and really low-calorie mayonnaise can be likened to eating paste in the first grade. There is usually a full fat, reduced fat, and low-fat option. Always choose the reduced-fat over the low fat. Also, I find mixing a small amount of the full fat in with lower fat mayonnaise gives you all the taste with so many less of the calories.

Breadcrumbs:

Panko breadcrumbs are excellent as they are lower-calorie and they get just as crispy in the oven as regular breadcrumbs would in a pan. Spray them with some olive oil spray to get them to really turn golden brown.

Ground beef vs Ground turkey:

let’s be honest. No one has ever preferred a turkey burger to the real thing, but the secret no one tells you is that if you buy 93/7 ground beef (meaning it is 93% fat-free) this can often be lower in calories than the turkey, and will taste a whole lot better too.

Butter:

OK butter is one of the most deliciously calorific foods out there but you need not despair. In many recipes, a spread like smart balance is virtually undetectable vs butter, but if you really need that butter flavor a 50/50 butter blend is the way to go. These are blends that are 50% butter, 50% smart balance or other spread. They give you the buttery flavor with many fewer calories and are much more guilt-free.

Mix it with water:

Say you are making fajitas and they call for a tablespoon or two of oil to sautee the beef and vegetables and then some fajita seasoning. Why waste the calories on the oil for sauteeing? Start to brown the meat and then when you add the vegetables add a half cup of water mix with the seasoning. By the time the water burns off, the vegetables are infused with the flavors of the spices so much more so than if you had used oil and the meal is so much healthier because of it.

When Cold Stone came to my town, my friends and classmates couldn’t have been more excited. Turns out, working at Cold Stone isn’t as awesome as it looked. Here’s a best-kept secret, people who work in service jobs have to nail on a happy face – not only do they have to act happy at work, they’re not allowed to complain about the job. It’s like being in a cult. Ever. This is why I had to wait until after I got fired to publicly write about what it’s really like to work at Cold Stone. 

Some may wonder how I could possibly complain about a job that gave me free ice cream. Well, that so-called benefit the company boasts is more of a lie to get people to apply. Yes, an associate can have $5 worth of product, but only during their break, and only if they get a break. In order to get a break, which is no longer than fifteen minutes, your shift has to be six hours. I was hardly ever given shifts that long, which was just as well since I really couldn’t take four hours never mind six, but even when I did get a long shift I wasn’t always allowed a break because of how busy the store would get. 

You see, it was a busy time to work there. Our franchise was just down the street from Fenway Park. Baseball season had just started and we were starting to see warm days. Even then, we were almost always understaffed, and I think the manager did the schedule like that on purpose. On more than one occasion, I would receive a call asking me to go in hours before my shift was set to start, or my manager would approach me during a night shift asking me if I could pick up an extra shift the next morning. I’m starting to wonder if my one-time refusal to accept the request was part of why I was fired. 

I think the big reason I was fired was because of my politics. I’m a marijuana advocate. I’m not a stoner, but I do think marijuana should be legal for both medicinal and recreational purposes. For this reason, I wanted to partake in the Worldwide Marijuana March in May, and I asked for the day off in order to participate. My manager found out why, and next time the schedule was sent out, I wasn’t on it. When I e-mailed asking why, the manager got frustrated and said “it’s just not working out.” In italics, and possibly bold as well, I can’t remember. 

Maybe another part of it was my inflexibility. It wasn’t that I couldn’t stay up late enough to work until close, I had to walk home. I’m a student at Northeastern, and I was working in the Fenway area. My choices were hop on a D train, take it to Copley and switch to an E train, which was safe but would have taken forever. It was cheaper and faster just to walk home along the Fens. Not exactly safe, which I only hoped my manager would understand. Maybe I asked for too many days off, though I tried not to. Taking time off meant getting to the calendar as soon as possible and hoping there was an empty slot where you wanted it. They had a dry erase calendar up, and if you wanted a day off you needed to put your name on it, in one of the three available slots. If you wanted a day off and there were already three names on it, you were pretty much outta luck. 

I can’t say I was the most competent member of the crew. I still don’t know how some people did it. They expected me to learn the sizes so quickly – and they’re not as easy as one scoop, two scoops, three scoops, that would be easy. No, the sizes were done by weight which we needed to get a “feel for” using a scale and plastic container (in front of the customers) before we could serve, and when I was getting the feel for them, I felt rushed; my trainer kept asking me “okay do you know it yet? Are you ready to start serving?” And I really should have taken my time because I was mostly crap at sizes. I would often serve too little and the people would complain, but if I gave too much the manager would complain. In my three weeks before getting fired I never got it down. 

Mixing took more skill than I thought too. Some ice creams are hard, mostly the chocolate flavored ice cream, and take forever just to pull. Mixing sounds simple on the surface, “chop, chop, fold, fold” or something like that. Well, being someone who’s always mixed her ice cream until it was perfectly blended, I erred on the side of taking too long mixing, resulting in a final product that was too soft and soupy rather than only taking five seconds and giving someone a barely mixed product. 

Movies coming to the big screen this fall are mostly predictable in terms of success. If you are a big time movie buff, then you would have seen most of them at il genio dello streaming. Big wig movie companies are desperately trying to recover from a less than favorable summer line-up of half-ass comedies and less-than-stellar movie remakes. Fall will come with a bunch of “straight to video” flicks built around “copycat plots” in Hollywood’s vain attempt to duplicate the success that was once lost, yet there are always the movies of the season that catch one’s interest.

A movie with a “copycat plot” previously mentioned is a picture that a movie-goer can easily pass by on an outing, sit down and predict the ending and all if it’s characters or compare to a movie in it’s likeness.This Fall we have the comedy copycats who have taken the off-beat success of it’s predecessors Napoleon Dynamite and The Office and generated relatable counterparts where the goofy, nerdy character finds himself, gets the girl and ends in an unrealistic happily ever after. Employee of the Month has the hot chick singer-turned-actress Jessica Simpson pared with Dax Shephard’s less-than-threatening character while in School for Scoundrels, Napoleon himself Jon Heder is pared with straight-faced Billy Bob Thornton in the competition for the affections of Jacinda Barrett who also stars in Fall’s The Notebook knock off The Last Kiss with oddball actor Zach Braff. Following along the counterfeit design comes The Rock with his traditional seasonal disaster Gridiron Gang, taking the hope, determination and good, wholesome family triumph of The Longest Yard with smaller players and Xzibit tagging along.

Next are the “Why Did They Even Bother?” movies where avid movie buffs can only sit back and shake their heads and raise their lips in sheer disdain. Although there aren’t near as many as there have been this season, bringing back not-so-successful remakes by simply slapping a “2” on the end, like The Grudge 2 from The Grudge, in order to solidify success is just plain lazy. Kutcher is back in The Guardian, with Kevin Costner, desperately trying to prove himself as a serious actor with another boring movie about absolutely nothing and water, Costner’s handicap. And last but not least, is a powder-faced Kirsten Dunst playing a teenage Marie Antoinette, Hollywood’s Fall attempt at biographical pictures, going through what else, but what all teenage characters that the ever-so-young Dunst is primed to portray: high school.

Lastly are my personal picks for a movie I would actually pay eight bucks to sit in a dark room full of strangers watch and maybe even enjoy. I can honestly say that I am “the horror type:” show me a good murder with an honestly good plot and I’ll clap my hands and giggle like a schoolgirl. Saw was that good horror movie for me since, I believe, The Exoricist. The murders, the characters, the villain, the motive and best of all, the fact that they never found the true killer before he died in the sequel makes Saw III, the third chapter in the trilogy, all the more exciting. There are certain rules to bringing back the past in a murder drama, but I have my own expectations for The Black Dahlia. Although one could argue that is a bunch of today’s young hotties trying their best to portray times and events they’ve never lived through, another could argue that that is the definition of acting. Now, I’m not so much the action type, but I am looking forward to Jet Li’s Fearless and hope it to be one of Li’s amazing martial arts masterpieces that everyone will be able to aesthetically admire instead of fully understand through subtitles or that insignificant thing called a plot.

I’m not a person to start writing hate-articles, but after yesterday’s events, I find this to be my only outlet to ventilate what I’ve got to say (just read that sentence again, and am not to sure what I’m really saying, to be honest). It’s about a football game. A European football game. So that would be soccer to most of the readers, I guess. You know, that game where guys can only touch the ball with their feet (unless they’re the keeper, they’ve got special privileges) and run like crazy for 90 minutes, only to see the game end in a 1-0 victory and 17 injured supporters.

To be frank, soccer has never been my cup of tea but a writer is bound by the wishes of his readers and has to write anything that they insist upon and not whatever takes to his fancy. I would have loved to publish a sensationalistic article like Beckham met Al-Khelaifi but, sadly, that doesn’t seem to be in my stars and I feel that it would remain a distant dream forever, but one should never give up hope as the entire world relies upon it. 

Anyway. The British Premier League is probably one of the most exciting leagues to watch, with some of the world’s best teams and players. Even if you’re not a big fan of the game, names like Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool will probably ring a bell somewhere in the back of your brain. Short situation sketch: Arsenal are the leaders, 5 points ahead of ManU (the ‘cool’ way to say Manchester United) and have a difficult away game scheduled at Birmingham. ManU plays later, so the result of the Arsenal game could influence ManU’s motivation as they might be able to close the gap with a win over Newcastle United.

Back to the Arsenal game. 3 minutes into the game, and Martin Taylor, a Birmingham player, commits a horrible tackle on Eduardo, one of Arsenal’s young promising players and season revelations. Taylor is shown the red card (which means he has to leave the game straight away and a committee will decide on how many games he’ll be suspended) but it’s only afterward that the people realize the seriousness of the injury. Eduardo was taken to the hospital where he went into immediate surgery for a double compound fracture of his leg.

Anybody who’s ever seen a game of soccer (I’ll just keep calling it that, wouldn’t want to loose anybody here) will know that occasional contact between players does happen, and unfortunately, this can lead to serious injuries, as the one suffered by Eduardo. Arsene Wenger, Arsenal’s coach and full-time whiner, went completely nuts after the game and insisted that Martin Taylor should be banned for life after his tackle. Important detail in this story is that Taylor is Birmingham’s captain, which means he’s a respected player and not a butcher. Although being a defender, he rarely gets yellow cards.

Obviously, I’m not saying that incidents of this kind should be overlooked just because the player is ‘a nice guy’. However, watching the video over and over again, it is clear that there is no intention to hit the player, and Eduardo was just too fast for Taylor, who misjudged his timing completely and hit Eduardo full on the ankle. Is this one mistake enough to ban him for life? Should a player suddenly be judged for one mistake? On any other day, Eduardo might have been able to finish the game and Taylor might have been shown just a yellow card. Every week, there’s players charging other player’s full on with two straight legs forward, where you immediately fear for the player’s career. This was not the case here. Wenger’s comment was completely over the top. It was probably a heat of the moment thing and also fueled by a last minute Birmingham equalizer from a dubious penalty, but his task as a coach is to remain calm under any circumstances. By saying such harsh words, he’s playing judge and jury and willingly or not influences referee’s.

What followed. After his surgery, Eduardo expressed his determination to make a swift recovery. Arsene Wenger apologized for his most devastating words and did say that a lot of it was said in the heat of the moment. Problem with words is, you can apologize, but you can’t take them back and make them unsaid….
