By now, most business people realize that it’s important to have a social media presence.

However, I have a feeling that in 2011, many local business people are going to begin to question just how effective social media really is to their company.

The reason for this, I think, will be because they expected miraculous results without putting in the required work. In fact, they probably don’t even understand just what that work really is and how to implement it.

Yes, social media is free, but it does require time, a plan of action and strategy. In fact, it’s really not free at all.

Instead of blaming the medium for not producing results, first ask: am I offering quality products and what my community wants? If you live in an Amish community, you’re probably not going to sell a lot of Maserati’s. Are you offering product or services that your audience wants? Are you offering quality?

Facebook and Twitter aren’t the problem. It takes a lot of time to engage your audience and network with other professionals that might be helpful to your business. TIME. That is the great price of social media marketing. Your homepage will not grow instantly. You need to do a lot of efforts and you have to employ strategic techniques so you can easily grow your following.

Yes, you have to create excellent content. You also have to engage with your community, you have to talk with them, be interested in their lives, offer helpful suggestions that don’t always relate to a sale for you. Honesty, integrity and transparency are key. Forget the old ways of doing business and marketing. PUSH marketing is dead. This is a new world. Get over it and tap into it.

This can help your efforts greatly – find a few of the dominant social media people in your area and engage them in you, and your product. Once you have demonstrated to them the importance of what you offer, they will share your info with their audience – that is the sweet spot. We all know the importance of Word of Mouth marketing and that is at it’s essence what social media can deliver to you.

Simply monitor your local conversations for a bit. You’ll quickly pick out who is a steady social media participant. Then set about making friends – just make sure you keep authenticity and transparency at the center of all you do. You’re not selling snake oil.

Don’t get panicky, I’m not saying you definitely will have to do this but it might help you at some point. There are numerous ways a social media marketing professional can help a local business effectively and inexpensively.

  • None An specialist can help you flesh out a strategy and plan of action. Many times, that is all that is needed for a local business professional to take the reigns and run with the program. You may just need some guidelines to follow.
  • None Farm out a portion of your social media efforts. Consistently I run across people who have an understanding of Facebook but don’t ‘get’ Twitter at all. If Twitter seems like a good fit for your business, instead of beating your head against the wall trying to add this to your schedule, (you won’t use it properly if you don’t enjoy it), pay someone to Tweet on your behalf – make sure they are a professional and understand your Strategy and vital things like keywords and hashtags. The teenager who works part time and is texting all time is not your best candidate for this.
  • None Schedule get-togethers with your local social media marketer for tutoring in order to keep abreast of new trends and applications that might work for your business. Paying someone a small fee every other month to help guide your efforts can prove to be money in the bank.
  • None Remember that video is king. If you don’t have the time or talent to produce your own video (these do not have to be professional quality – at this point in time, home made is more approachable than professionally produced video), hire someone who can. Plan what you want video of and how it should be approached, then let someone who loves filming do the work!

If you are struggling with your social media presence, please remember that you need to take an honest step back and evaluate the professionalism of your plan. I encourage you not to give up, but take the time it takes to learn how to leverage this powerful medium for your highest good.

Faced by the sheer variety of social media platforms many feel rightly traumatised. If an addition you are ‘forced’ to take the lead on social media, this can lead to further problems that we’ve covered in earlier posts. However, if you can find the social media platform that fits your personality and the way you think then you can succeed. However, it does not matter if you are suited to a platform if you cannot commit to regular and consistent posting; in that instance, you should not attempt the task as an unused professional profile can do untold damage to a brand.

These profiles are what make you a novice in handling social media platforms as they are difficult to manage for someone new to it due to the sheer number of platforms available and YouTube is fast becoming a popular hub to get viewership that you can read about at

In the previous post on creating content, we explored what type of content works best on what platform. We all have a particular thinking and learning style and classically they are separate into 3 main types, although there are more. The classic ones are:

Strongly, visual people will be drawn to platforms like Instagram and Pinterest or to visual content on Facebook and Google. However, they will struggle with Twitter and with text.

Auditory types will strongly favour text and will gravitate to Twitter. It is not random that journalists prefer Twitter and not just because it is an open and public platform.

With Kinaesthetics it is very much about the feel of things and it is interesting how platforms are developing on mobile phones and bringing a more physical experience to social media.

Key Questions you Need to Answer

  • Do you like reading? Are you critical about bad grammar?
  • Are you always taking selfies and find it easy to talk about yourself, but dry up when you have to do it for your company?
  • Do you find it easy to tweet corporate speak, but then find it difficult to simply be yourself?
  • Do you like browsing photos, but necessarily commenting?
  • Are you really only interesting in connecting with other businesses and want to keep your private life, well, private?

The more text oriented you are, the better the likes of Twitter and LinkedIn will work for you.

If you want to maintain privacy and just keep it strictly professional, LinkedIn is the right choice.

If you are strongly visual and love taking selfies then Instagram, Snapchat and Vine are the way to go. However, if you are more of a consumer and collector and shopper then Pinterest will be more your thing.

For those who are actually representing their company or a client on social media, then you need to be able to create content. If you cannot create graphics/edit images then largely speaking you will struggle to create content for social media and it will tend to curate content instead of creating it, which is a problem if you want to grow a brand. You may be great at instagram, but you may stumble doing instagram for your company without going over foundational steps and asking foundational questions.

The bottom line: only start a platform if you can keep up with regular posts and choose a platform you are comfortable with.

All social media platforms need a bit of caution and education before you embrace them completely.Always research a new platform, see how the current users use it, then go ahead and do a Google search to see if there is any negative publicity that might slop over onto your pristine brand.

Now this is going to be an interesting discussion to say the least because it is in the nature of the human psyche to lookout for such news items that would pique their curiosity to the next level and what better than entertainment to do so.

The social media revolution has its fair share of admirers and detractors in equal measure but the fact is that one simply cannot ignore its impact on the citizens of every nation across the globe, especially the younger generation folks.

This is the era of smartphones and online apps where you can satisfy your thirst for entertainment and at the same time prove your worth in the larger circle that got suppressed by the professional life of jobs and businesses.

New Age Sensation

Tiktok is a word that needs no introduction for it has acquired the phenomenal status of a rare kind that no celebrity in existence has achieved and that too in such a short time which speaks volumes of its caliber.

Its enormous impact on young minds can be gauged from the fact that Tiktok video download became the number one trend on Twitter within days of its launch and none more so than countries like India and United States, which led to other nations to follow suit.

Now the number of Tiktokers has reached the mammoth figure of 700 million with nearly 90% of them being in the age group of 12-26 years that is a remarkable achievement that was both unseen and unheard of till now.

Apart from India being the number revenue market due to its large population, US accounts for nearly 70 million users in the 18 to 28 years age group which is both astonishing and alarming.

Tiktok has become more addictive than alcohol, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram put together and this has become a problem that needs to be looked into sooner than later.

We all have our whole life in front of us that we care a fig about during childhood as that is the time to enjoy it to the fullest potential and leave the stress and worries to the parents.

The problems begin when you complete your graduation and move onto finding a job that is hard to do so in current times as the competition is fierce and opportunities are few and far between with blatant nepotism adding rubbing salt on the festering wounds.

However, there is a silver lining in this grim process in the social media that is a powerful medium that everyone can utilize in current times where you have numerous platforms to help you out in this matter.

Brand Value

The social media platforms in question are Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram where the latter has played a huge role in shaping the lives of many a youngster because you get to have a huge following on this platform if you have good content.

There is a reason why renowned celebrities have Instagram accounts as they know of how powerful this platform is to promote their brand value but this holds true for common folks as well which you can know through

If you want to promote yourself then Instagram is the platform where you just have to create your own account where you tell people about what you have in mind and how the project is going to unfold.

The people that are interested will look at it and start following your account one by one which would slowly develop into a huge brand where you can motivate fans on how to move forward in life.

If need be, you can also come up live on Instagram where your followers will join in and bombard you with queries which you can answer to clear their doubts so that they can decide better.

I’m not an advocate to say the least but we all have opinions and at some point we are all eager to join a cause that will make a difference in our lives.

Voting is the very first place to raise our voices. Voting is the medium to the building blocks of our future as a whole. Today we have ‘social media’. Social media has become that avenue where we can ALL make a difference. We can stand out from the crowd and raise our voices on the issues that touch our lives in more ways than one.

Utilizing social media to start a revolution as the advocate that has a cause. Make sure that your cause is worthy enough to gain the attention it needs to make a rumble within the social networking walls of our society.

Fight the power! What is your story? What are you trying to convey to those you want to reach out to? If you can articulate what you want to say, you can convince people to join your cause. Think of a strong and empowering name for your cause. The name should represent who you are, and what your cause is all about. Social networking sites are plentiful. Choose the one that best fits your needs, this should be the one that you have the most connections.

Create a page and or a group. People are visual creatures. Provide photos and videos so that your group can gain the right kind of people to help your cause grow. Allowing a place where people can connect and conversate is a great way to get people involved. As the administrator of your group and or page make sure you can delegate who can connect with your group and what kind of comments they can share. Be careful and mindful of opening your group up to hackers that may be against your cause.

As the numbers begin to grow think about creating a personalized website away from the social networking site. This will give your cause a home of its own. More information can be offered and you can begin connecting with those that are not a part of the social networking site.

Now you can research and gain the support you need for your cause. Reach out to political parties of your interest. Your local and state congressman, senates, city officials and church home. Hold events, charitable functions to create more exposure, inviting the local media down and or video taping the event and hosting those videos on your site. It is also necessary to get instagram followers fast free. This will allow you to establish a wide variety of audiences for your cause.

Exposure is the key. Becoming an advocate and fighting for a cause you strongly believe in takes hard work and dedication. If more of us stepped out of our comfort zones to fight for something we believe in, the world could begin to be a better place.

Social media can be a contentious battleground for young teens and their parents. Of course, most children know how to safely use social media websites, even if their parents don’t think so. It will still continue to be a controversial thing between parents and children either way. Parents who really are that cautious about what their child does on the Internet should consider a few different things. Therefore, here are some tips for parents and dealing with their children and social media.

Don’t try to ban your child from social media.

Most uptight parents try to ban their children from using social media in the house and elsewhere, which is almost guaranteed not to work. For starters, it’s nearly impossible to govern everything that your child does. It’s exceptionally easy for a young teen to create a Facebook or Twitter account with a fake name that their parents will never find. Banning your child from social media usage isn’t going to do anything but give him or her an even bigger reason to use these sites. On that note, banning social media isn’t the answer, but a common ground can be found.

Avoid “managing” your child’s social media life.

Unfortunately, many parents try to actively manage what their child does on a site like Facebook or Myspace. Such a tactic will only lead to arguments and resentment. As a parent, you don’t need to be your child’s social media “friend” or governor. You shouldn’t force your child to let you access their accounts either. Obviously, it’s not legally an invasion of privacy, but on a basic ethical level it is exactly that. “Managing” your child’s social media accounts is nothing short of controlling them like a despot.

Come up with an agreement if you think your child is a little young.

Still, you should definitely come to an agreement with your teenager about their social media use. You can bar your teen’s use at the house but not elsewhere or you could agree to give your child their privacy as long as they don’t get into trouble. On the other hand, you could also let your child have their Facebook or Twitter as long as they don’t post personal information other than their name or talk to creepy strangers. In the end, you have the most leverage in these arrangements, but your child always has the ability to go behind your back.

If you’re going to snoop, then do it smartly.

Parents like to snoop around their child’s social media accounts, even if they won’t admit it. Of course, parents of young teens are even more likely to do this. If you are going to snoop around your child’s Facebook or something, then you should at least do it secretly. It might not be right, but you could create a fake account to befriend your child and keep track of their activities. Amusingly, most children won’t think twice about adding most people – that doesn’t mean that they’ll actually talk to these people. Some children won’t set their privacy settings to private, so you could just look at their profiles and posts that way.

Use social media yourself.

To better understand teens and social media, you should get a few accounts yourself. Most parents that don’t want their children to use social media don’t actually do so themselves either. A lot of parents that give social media a try eventually realize that it isn’t some big evil or anything like that. Of course, this leads to parents letting their child use these sites. In the end, you might get a Facebook, use it infrequently, and then decide that you don’t understand it. You are definitely going to understand why your child wants to use it though.

Facebook? Myspace? StumbleUpon? Twitter?

Social media sites really aren’t the devils that parents make them out to be. Without a doubt, children can safely use these sites to talk to their friends and follow their favorite people. Most parents are overreacting when they try to bar their children from these sites. Still, parents can -at the very least – create an agreeable arrangement with their children when it comes to Facebook, Myspace, and more. Teens deserve to use social media. Sure, younger children might be a much different story.

While it is true that one must exercise caution while on social media, but it is also a fact that today’s generation kids are way intelligent and farsighted than their parents can imagine and are wise to the goings on in the world. So what the parents can do at the least is motivate their children to find their career in this profession if they’re interested and simply buy instagram likes cheap from friends to encourage them into it.
